Acquiring Art on a Trip

Buying art on a trip is a fun way to add to a collection, but it takes some forethought and planning. It is also important to manage your expectations that trying to find a fabulous piece of art while on vacation that fits in a precise location in your home and that the whole family loves is nearly impossible.

A good analogy is the planning that goes into finding great restaurants while traveling. Doing a little research into your timing, and your cuisine preferences helps you find the types of places that will work within your trip.

Above is a small painting my mother discovered at a little roadside stall during our trip to Ireland in 1985. When we returned, she had it framed for our home. Although it was uninteresting to me as a fourteen-year-old, this painting has evolved into something special that carries layers of meaning. Tips for acquiring art on a trip

1. Research the top galleries in the area before you go. The good ones are usually off the beaten path and not where the tourists are congregating. And remember, “good” galleries doesn’t have to mean expensive. 

2. Dedicate time early in your vacation to see the galleries that are on your list. If you find a piece that resonates you will likely want the time during the remainder of your trip to think about the artwork.  Ask for the gallerists’ contact information so you can reach out later if you decide to proceed.  

3. Buy art that you love. Not everyone in your household needs to like the same piece of art! Give yourself permission to buy art for yourself. Maybe the reason you connect with the piece is completely different than how a spouse, child or friend does. Remember, art is personal.  You can have this work of art in a space you primarily occupy, an office, a bathroom, a reading nook.

4. Ship your artwork. While shipping adds to the cost, it arrives more safely and can be insured.  It will also save space in your luggage and is a nice surprise that can await you on your return.
